Upcoming Information Session: Friday, June 7 at 7pm

Arts Milton is pleased to announce its return to planning Culture Days 2013 in partnership with the Milton
Arts Milton will organize a weekend of activities to celebrate arts and culture within the
community as part of the Canada-wide festivities. Activities will take place Friday, September 27 to
Sunday, September 29 at the Milton Centre for the Arts and will include free, interactive activities that
invite the public to participate “behind the scenes”—and to discover the world of artists, creators,
historians, architects, curators, and designers at work in the community.
“Arts Milton is thrilled to already be planning for Culture Days 2013 at the Milton Centre for the Arts. After
the roaring success of Culture Days 2012, which included over 30 events, and over 800 participants, we
can’t wait to see what our local artists have in store for the community this year. Milton is very lucky to
have a substantial wealth of artistic talent right in our own backyard!” said Elizabeth Kmiec, President of
Arts Milton.

What is Culture Days?

Culture Days is an annual, 3-day volunteer movement initiated in 2010 by The Canadian Arts Summit and
supported by the federal government to raise awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement in
arts and cultural life. Communities are encouraged to host free, public events throughout Culture Days
that invite participation and feature hands-on interactive activities, which promote the celebration of the
arts at work within the community. “Culture Days is a free weekend-long event, where we invite you to
come and see just what these artists are doing, and the best part is that you get to try it, too,” added
Elizabeth Kmiec.

I’m an artist…How can I get involved?

Community members can find out how to participate in Culture Days by attending an upcoming
Information Session taking place on Friday, June 7 at the Milton Centre for the Arts. The Information
Session, hosted by Arts Milton and Culture Days, is intended to bring together community members in an
effort to increase the impact and success of Culture Days in our community. The session is free, and
open to everyone including artists, professional and volunteer-run cultural groups, libraries, museums,
schools, the Business Improvement Association (BIA), local media, and anyone else wishing to support
and to participate in the Canada-wide celebration of arts and culture.

Arts Milton & Culture Days

Culture Days is a national event, hosted at the local community level.  Last year, Arts Milton helped coordinate over 30 activities spanning a broad spectrum of media and cultures.  As a result, Milton was ranked in the top 10 presenters of regional and belt cities…pretty amazing considering we were right up there with bigger cities, like Mississauga, North Vancouver, and cultural mecca Stratford, ON.

Five Ways to Promote Arts at the Office

Your business may have nothing to do with painting, music, drama or literature, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a place for the arts in your office.  Whether you work a little into everyday routines, or you decide to share in an experience after hours, encouraging your employees and fellow workers to engage with the arts can help with team-building, stress management, and most importantly, creativity and innovation.

Five Easy Ways to Promote Art in the Office:

  1. Allow local artists to display their work on your walls.  Choose pieces that are soothing, thought-provoking, or inspiring, and allow your team to help select them.  With the wide variety of art being produced in your community, it’s possible you’ll even find something related to your industry.
  2. Create a mini-lending library in your lunch room.  Ask co-workers to donate books that they’ve enjoyed, and explain that for every book they drop off, they can take another home to enjoy.  Chances are, your team will start discussing what they’ve read over coffee.
  3.  Organize a group outing to a concert or theatre event.  Take advantage of group rates on tickets, and give your team the opportunity to get to know one another outside of work.
  4. Hold “movie lunches.”  Choose something new and interesting that people might not have seen, like a great independent film, and watch it together over two or three days.
  5. Sponsor a high school arts program, or contribute to a local arts group.  Budding artists are always in need of funding to run classes, events, and extracurricular activities.  Your donation may even get you ad space in a program.

Engaging with the arts is a great way to bring your business and your team members closer to your community!  See how many of these five ways to promote arts at the office YOU can implement!

Do you have additional ideas?  Let’s hear them!  Share YOUR techniques for promoting the arts at your workplace in the comments.
